FTC & CFPB Fight to Save Billions for Consumers by Cracking Down on Junk Fees

October 11, 2023 — The Biden-Harris administration announced new actions today to rid the economy of junk fees and promote competition, including a proposed rule banning “hidden and bogus” fees across the economy from the Federal Trade Commission, new guidance from the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau to stop big banks from charging excessive fees for basic services, new data proving the millions in savings for consumers from junk fee crackdowns, along with momentum from the Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs to help agencies better develop and analyze regulations with competition in mind. In response, the American Economic Liberties Project released the following statement.  

DOJ Should Cancel New ‘Get Out of Jail Free’ Card Policy for Corporate Crime in Mergers

October 4, 2023 — In anticipation of a new policy change from the Justice Department, previewed earlier today by Deputy Attorney General Lisa Monaco, which would allow firms who commit crimes to get amnesty as long as they are acquired and then disclose wrongdoing within six months of the merger, the American Economic Liberties Project released the following statement.

70+ Organizations Urge Federal Trade Commission to Block Kroger-Albertsons

September 28, 2023 — Last Friday, United Food & Commercial Workers International Union, along with the American Economic Liberties Project and more than 70 other organizations — an alliance of packinghouse workers, ranchers, farmers, consumers, and rural Americans — sent a letter to the Federal Trade Commission urging them to block the harmful Kroger-Albertsons merger.

September 26, 2023 — The Federal Trade Commission — along with 17 state attorneys general today filed a lawsuit against Amazon alleging that the company is an illegal monopoly that raises prices across the economy. Economic Liberties Requests the SEC to Investigate Apple for Violating Securities Act and Federal Security Laws

September 26, 2023 — The American Economic Liberties Project sent a letter today to the Securities and Exchange Commission to request that they investigate Apple Inc. to determine whether the company has violated the antifraud provisions of Section 17(a)(2) and (3) of the Securities Act of 1933, as well as certain reporting provisions of the federal securities laws.
