Nearly every American knows the feeling of sticker shock after opening a sky-high utility bill. That’s because over recent decades, utility monopolies have gamed, captured, and altogether made a mockery of the regulatory process that’s supposed to keep them in check, extracting excessive profits at the public’s expense. Since 2020, these monopolies have increased residential electricity rates 49% above inflation.
State lawmakers across the country, though, are fighting back, working on new laws to rein in utility profiteering and protecting their constituents from this growing cost of living pain point.
On Wednesday, March 12 at 11:00am ET / 10:00am CT, join the American Economic Liberties Project for a virtual workshop on how states can challenge utilities monopolies’ political power and deliver monthly savings to ratepayers, featuring keynote remarks from Arizona State Senator Priya Sundareshan.
The virtual workshop will be moderated by Pat Garofalo, Director of State and Local Policy at the American Economic Liberties Project. We’ll also be joined by Mark Ellis, a longtime utility finance insider and Economic Liberties’ Senior Fellow, and other guests who will break down our new state utility policy toolkit and recent paper. We hope you can join us!
