Washington D.C. — In response to Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker’s signing of the Junk Fee Ban Act, which was championed by State Senator Omar Aquino and State Representative Bob Morgan, the American Economic Liberties Project released the following statement:

“For too long, giant corporations have used deceptive, hidden fees to squeeze every penny out of ordinary people and small businesses,” said Pat Garofalo, Director of State and Local Policy at American Economic Liberties Project. “Today, Illinois joined a growing number of states cracking down on these dishonest pricing tactics. Whether renting an apartment, buying a concert ticket, or paying a cell phone bill, Americans should know the full price up front without getting coerced into paying hundreds more.”

“Hidden junk fees don’t just deceive consumers, they undermine the very logic of supply and demand,” Garofalo added. “If big corporations can advertise fake prices that bear little resemblance to what customers actually pay, consumers can’t reward firms that are truly cheaper. There is no free market without price transparency.”
