Economic Liberties Applauds Illinois State Senate for Advancing Junk Fees Ban

May 8, 2025 Press Release

Washington, D.C. — Following news that the Illinois State Senate has passed SB1486, a bill that would ban junk fees across the state, the American Economic Liberties Project released the following statement.

“Today’s vote puts Illinois on a path to becoming the latest state to crack down on junk fees economy wide,” said Pat Garofalo, Director of State and Local Policy at the American Economic Liberties Project. “These hidden, deceptive fees cost working families thousands of dollars each year and give giant corporations an unfair leg up over honest local businesses. As state after state steps up to outlaw them — from Virginia to California, Colorado, Massachusetts, and Minnesota— the Illinois Senate is sending a clear message: Consumers deserve transparent and fair pricing. We’re grateful to Senator Omar Aquino and the other co-sponsors for championing this commonsense legislation and urge the House to pass it swiftly and send it to the Governor’s desk.”

The American Economic Liberties Project works to ensure America’s system of commerce is structured to advance, rather than undermine, economic liberty, fair commerce, and a secure, inclusive democracy. Economic Liberties believes true economic liberty means entrepreneurs and businesses large and small succeed on the merits of their ideas and hard work; commerce empowers consumers, workers, farmers, and engineers instead of subjecting them to discrimination and abuse from financiers and monopolists; foreign trade arrangements support domestic security and democracy; and wealth is broadly distributed to support equitable political power.
