Economic Liberties Applauds Mamdani Administration for Cracking Down on Junk Fees and Subscription Traps in New York City
New York, NY — Following a new executive order signed today by New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, which cracks down on costly subscription traps and junk fees across the economy, the American Economic Liberties Project released the following statement.
“This is a massive win for every New Yorker who has been frustratingly ripped off when opening a gym membership or making a purchase online,” said Pat Garofalo, Director of State and Local Policy at the American Economic Liberties Project. “With prices top of mind for so many, navigating the economy should not have to feel like a never-ending dance of evading scams and tricks. Cracking down on the use of predatory junk fees and pricey subscription traps that lock consumers into cycles of never-ending charges are commonsense initiatives that will save consumers time, money, and aggravation. We’re pleased to see the Mamdani Administration act so swiftly on these issues and commit to using existing tools to protect consumers.”

The American Economic Liberties Project works to ensure America’s system of commerce is structured to advance, rather than undermine, economic liberty, fair commerce, and a secure, inclusive democracy. Economic Liberties believes true economic liberty means entrepreneurs and businesses large and small succeed on the merits of their ideas and hard work; commerce empowers consumers, workers, farmers, and engineers instead of subjecting them to discrimination and abuse from financiers and monopolists; international trade arrangements that promote balanced trade and benefit workers, farmers and small businesses; and wealth is broadly distributed to support equitable political power.
