Economic Liberties Applauds Minnesota Senate on Passage of Junk Fee Ban

May 1, 2024 Press Release

Washington, DC—In response to news that the Minnesota Senate has passed HF 3438, a ban on junk fees, by a bipartisan vote of 41-24, the American Economic Liberties Project released the following statement.

“The Minnesota Senate has delivered a huge win for consumers and honest businesses across the state,” said Pat Garofalo, Director of State and Local Policy at the American Economic Liberties Project. “Minnesotans are a big step closer to knowing the true price of goods and services they purchase up-front, rather than being nickel-and-dimed by a growing number of deceptive fees. Unsurprisingly, this legislation is overwhelmingly popular, with support from 85 percent of likely Minnesota voters. We commend Senator Port for her leadership on this issue.”

The American Economic Liberties Project works to ensure America’s system of commerce is structured to advance, rather than undermine, economic liberty, fair commerce, and a secure, inclusive democracy. Economic Liberties believes true economic liberty means entrepreneurs and businesses large and small succeed on the merits of their ideas and hard work; commerce empowers consumers, workers, farmers, and engineers instead of subjecting them to discrimination and abuse from financiers and monopolists; foreign trade arrangements support domestic security and democracy; and wealth is broadly distributed to support equitable political power.
