Economic Liberties Applauds New Pennsylvania Antitrust Reform Bill

June 24, 2022 Press Release

Washington, D.C. — The American Economic Liberties Project released the following statement following the introduction of the Open Markets Act in Pennsylvania.

“Reps. Innamorato and Pisciottano are showing real leadership by proposing a new antitrust law that would protect Pennsylvania workers and local businesses from the abusive tactics of dominant corporations,” said Pat Garofalo, director of state and local policy at the American Economic Liberties Project. “If enacted, the Open Markets Act would give enforcers vital powers to rein in corporate abuse and crack down on out of control health care mergers, better protecting workers and patients in that critical industry.”

“At all levels of government, there is clearly momentum to reform ineffective and outdated antitrust laws in order to respond to America’s crisis of corporate concentration,” Garofalo added. “The Pennsylvania bill is a solid example of that effort, and we urge other state legislators to introduce and pass similar legislation in order to ensure that local workers and business have a fair shot in the marketplace.”

The American Economic Liberties Project works to ensure America’s system of commerce is structured to advance, rather than undermine, economic liberty, fair commerce, and a secure, inclusive democracy. Economic Liberties believes true economic liberty means entrepreneurs and businesses large and small succeed on the merits of their ideas and hard work; commerce empowers consumers, workers, farmers, and engineers instead of subjecting them to discrimination and abuse from financiers and monopolists; foreign trade arrangements support domestic security and democracy; and wealth is broadly distributed to support equitable political power.
