Economic Liberties Stands in Solidarity With UPS Teamsters

July 5, 2023 Press Release

Washington, D.C. — In response to news that United Parcel Service (UPS) has walked away from negotiations with the International Brotherhood of Teamsters over a new contract for fair working conditions for its 340,000 UPS drivers, the American Economic Liberties Project released the following statement.

“Economic Liberties stands in full support of and solidarity with hardworking Teamsters’ UPS drivers as they fight for the wages and benefits they deserve,” said Nidhi Hegde, Managing Director at the American Economic Liberties Project. “No corporation should be able to abuse its power to muscle workers out of fair compensation, safe working conditions, affordable healthcare, and dignified retirement. The 340,000 Teamsters truck drivers are a key piece of our domestic supply chain. Should UPS fail to reach a fair contract before the expiration date, the Teamsters are well within their right to withhold their labor until UPS can guarantee the terms they deserve.”

The American Economic Liberties Project works to ensure America’s system of commerce is structured to advance, rather than undermine, economic liberty, fair commerce, and a secure, inclusive democracy. Economic Liberties believes true economic liberty means entrepreneurs and businesses large and small succeed on the merits of their ideas and hard work; commerce empowers consumers, workers, farmers, and engineers instead of subjecting them to discrimination and abuse from financiers and monopolists; foreign trade arrangements support domestic security and democracy; and wealth is broadly distributed to support equitable political power.
