New National Poll Finds Broad, Bipartisan Support for FTC’s Case Against Facebook

December 16, 2020 Press Release

WASHINGTON, D.C. —  New polling released today by Data for Progress and the American Economic Liberties Project finds that a majority (62%) of likely voters, including Democrats, Republicans and Independents, support the Federal Trade Commission’s latest suit against Facebook for their anti-competitive practices, specifically their acquisitions of Instagram and WhatsApp.

Additionally, the polling finds that 56% of survey respondents support President-elect Biden’s decision to exclude Google executives from positions in his cabinet while only 19% oppose it. Similarly, 50% say Biden should appoint people who haven’t previously worked for Big Tech companies and who will commit to holding Big Tech accountable. Just 35% of respondents said they thought Big Tech executives should serve in the administration.

“The polling out today shows us that most Americans believe Facebook’s anti-competitive practices are wrong, and they should be held accountable,” said Morgan Harper, a Senior Advisor at the American Economic Liberties Project. “They also see that in order to do this, President-elect Biden cannot fill his administration with those who have made money by working for Big Tech in the past. The American people know that Big Tech has too much power and support the federal government fighting back to protect them, the economy, and small businesses.”

Indeed, this polling comes as efforts to break the power of Big Tech reach a fever pitch. Last week, New York Attorney General Letitia James, along with 47 state and territorial AGs, and the Federal Trade Commission, filed suit against Facebook challenging its illegal monopoly power over social media communications. Just weeks before, the Department of Justice filed a historic antitrust suit against Google, which similar polling found was also broadly supported by the American people. Both lawsuits also came as the House Antitrust Subcommittee concluded its remarkable investigation of Big Tech by recommending structural separations of Big Tech companies in its final report.

Economic Liberties works to ensure America’s system of commerce is structured to advance, rather than undermine, economic liberty, fair commerce, and a secure, inclusive democracy. Economic Liberties believes true economic liberty means entrepreneurs and businesses large and small succeed on the merits of their ideas and hard work; commerce empowers consumers, workers, farmers, and engineers instead of subjecting them to discrimination and abuse from financiers and monopolists; foreign trade arrangements support domestic security and democracy; and wealth is broadly distributed to support equitable political power.
